 Firewood is normally measured by the cord, which is a stack of wood 4 feet high, 8 feet wide, and 4 feet deep, equal to 128 cubic feet. If the wood is thrown into a pile, it will require 180 cubic feet to result in a cord of wood when stacked. 

Over the years the term “cord” has been used loosely for smaller quantities of wood. A “face cord", ”fireplace cord”, or “rick” is a stack of wood 4 feet high by 8 feet long by the length of one log.

Tom's Top Notch seasoned firewood has less than 20% moisture content, which is ideal for efficient and effective burning. Freshly cut wood contains 45-50% moisture and burns poorly, producing little heat and excess smoke. Drying typically takes one to two summers—dense woods like oak need longer and must be split, while lighter woods dry faster if split. Wood with visible moisture at the ends is not ready for burning. Tom's Top Notch does have green, or semi-seasoned wood for sale at an economical price but recommend if purchased, you store and dry it completely before burning.

FIREWOOD STORAGE TIPS

Stack firewood off the ground, using pallets or logs, for better air circulation and drying. Cover only the top to protect from rain and snow, leaving sides open for airflow. Stack wood with the bark side up to shed water, and use a hard surface like concrete to further reduce moisture absorption.
